Tips for shooting gorgeous wedding videos

Everyone wants to capture their wedding in a beautiful and touching way. Vivid storytelling will make your wedding video memorable, and has the power to evoke feelings of nostalgia long after you have viewed it. Creating gorgeous wedding videos requires a lot of preparation, but it’s worth it.

Whether you are looking for tips on how to best shoot your wedding video or want to learn the basics of weddings videography, this article is perfect for you! We spoke to Highlander Yorkshire Wedding Videographer to bring you our top tips for shooting gorgeous wedding videos.

Communicate clearly with the couple

Communication is key. Start speaking to the couple before the wedding to find out about their expectations and to build a relationship. This will help break the ice and help the couple feel more relaxed in front of your lens on the actual wedding day.

Speak to the photographer

Shooting a wedding day film means you will probably have to work with a wedding photographer. Again, communication is very important here. Start it early and agree on a plan where you don’t get in each other’s way and don’t compete for the same shots.

Choose cameras with a superior low-light performance

With the right equipment and some solid preparation, you can shoot a beautiful set of wedding videos that reflect your clients’ personality, as well as the story of their big day. Wedding venues may be dimly lit to set the mood, but your cameras should still be able to pick up plenty of detail without adding any artificial lights. Pick cameras with good ISO performance and prepare yourself for low light conditions.

Using Only the best lenses

Invest in the best lenses you can afford. Sharp and bright wide aperture optics will help you get the best results in challenging light conditions.

Be prepared for all light conditions

That’s where wedding videography differs from commercial work in a studio. Throughout the day you will have to rely on ambient light (mostly) and it will change a lot. Dark wedding venues, bright and direct sunlight, light flares, you name it.

Use aerial & wide angle shots

Wedding videographers are known for narrow angles. Most of the day we film using telephoto lenses to focus on the couple and to exclude unwanted distractions in the background. But remember to use wide angle lenses as well where possible and shoot aerial video as well to give the couple a variety of angles.

Keep the camera steady

Invest in quality and sturdy tripods, monopods and gimbals to help you capture footage without unwanted motion and camera shake. You can always correct some motion using video stabilisation software but that doesn’t always get the best results. Get it right the moment you record your video footage.

Capture emotions

As you go through life, there are certain moments that you will want to cherish and relive for years to come. Weddings are one of those moments where the bride, groom and guests need to remember how beautiful it was and how much fun everyone had. By taking these special moments, you can make sure that everyone who was there at the wedding will remember what an amazing time they had as long as they live. When it comes to capturing these special moments on video, you can use many different techniques to create a spectacular wedding video but at the end of the day your couples don’t know much about these, they want to see emotions.

Remember about traditional shots

As creative as you are in your videography approach, you cannot forget about the traditional shots every couple expects. Group shots, getting ready, bridal party etc… get these dona as soon as you can to leave you more time to get creative and experiment with your style.

Record quality audio

The biggest mistake I see in wedding videos is poor audio quality. The most important thing you can do is to use a separate quality microphone for the groom and bride. Don’t rely on built-in microphones your cameras have. If you’re going to be recording outdoors, be aware of possible wind noise or other environmental sounds that could interrupt your footage. Use windshield if necessary. Good audio will help your wedding films to stand out and separate you from amatour videographers.

Remember the basics

Make sure you have enough storage space to record high-quality video all day. Make sure your batteries are charged and bring extra batteries just in case.

Conclusion

Remember, the key to creating great wedding videos is to ensure that you are capturing the moments. The little things may go overlooked, but when it really comes down to it, those little things are what make the day special. So remember, before and during the wedding: your job is to capture those special moments and all of the emotional elements that go along with them. With this in mind, you will be well on your way to creating a video that meets your clients’ expectations and leaves them feeling fantastic about their most important day of their lives.
